Special Education Teacher
Reports to Assistant Principal and Principal of the Steps Middle & High School
Full Time/Academic Calendar/ TRB Eligible
EdAdvance Regional Learning Center – Torrington, CT
Position is open until filled & begins August 2023
Steps Middle & High School is a specialized educational day program serving special education students with behavioral challenges in grades 6-12.
The program is designed to replicate a typical high school experience while maintaining small class sizes and high staff to student ratio.
Steps students receive team-based behavioral and academic instruction from certified special education and content area teachers, school social workers, and registered behavior technicians.
All students enrolled in the program also participate in weekly individual counseling sessions, work towards successfully completing their postsecondary and transitional goals/objectives with our school counselor and transition coordinator, and participate in a school-wide tiered behavioral support system that is monitored by Steps’ on-site Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Job Description: EdAdvance is seeking a qualified applicant to utilize their special education certification to teach core and elective content to middle/high school special education students.
The qualified candidate will be professional, organized, and able to work independently.
Major Responsibilities:
Provide academic instruction and case management to middle and high school students who are enrolled in an outplacement educational program serving students with social-emotional difficulties and behavioral challenges
Use a variety of instructional strategies to engage and motivate students
Utilize restorative practices to help students regulate their behavior, develop perspective-taking, and take personal responsibility for their actions
Other duties as may be assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Special Education procedures and regulations
Experience navigating all aspects within CT-SEDS platform
Experience in writing IEP goals, completing achievement evaluations and interpreting the results to propose services and instructional needs
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrate flexibility in response to unpredictability of student academic and behavioral needs
Ability to withstand the physical demands of frequent standing, bending, kneeling and therapeutic holding as required
Qualifications/Requirements:
Current Connecticut Certification in Special Education (Endorsement#: 065 or 165 or 265)
Master’s Degree in Special Education preferred
Desire to work with students who struggle with regulating behavior and social emotional responses
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to physically participate in student restraint and/or seclusion
Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this job
