HOHM CUTAWAY INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL & TRAILER Attention: Collectors of these unique and beautiful models.
This Hohm EH-56 is a full-frame motorized model that was built in Germany in 1956 by Emil Hohm and sold by Werner Degener in Hanover, Germany.
These rare and rugged detailed models were used as instructional tools by driving schools - such instruction in the workings of an automobile was required before issuance of a driver’s license.
I acquired it and the trailer from a seller in the Netherlands approximately 20 years ago.
At the age of 80 I have reluctantly decided to part with these prized possessions.
The car measures approximately 40” long resting on a hollow wooden base measuring 42”L x 4”H x 15”W (where the electric motor and wiring resides) – Total height with base is 17 inches.
Mounted on the steel channel-beam chassis is a four cylinder engine with a transparent case for observing the operation of the pistons, camshaft, crankshaft, overhead valves and rockers – driven by the electric motor in the base and belted to the crankshaft, all of the motors components are in motion with red lights flashing indicating the firing of the spark plugs – fascinating to watch and learn.
A cutaway manual 3 speed gearbox with reverse is operated by the shift lever and clutch transferring power to the rear wheels by way of the driveshaft, a cutaway differential and half shafts.
The suspension consists of leaf springs - the drum brakes function when the brake pedal is pushed or the emergency brake is engaged, visible through cutaways in the wheels, with functioning brake lights .
The steering worm gear is visible via a cutaway.
The headlights, with high and low beams function – tail lights and rear marker plate light function – directional signals function.
The necessary plug for conversion to 110V is included.
Everything works as it should and the model is complete and original down to a patina earned through the many years is was used during countless instructions to mesmerized students.
The trailer was used to teach students how to couple and uncouple a trailer from a truck.
It functions flawlessly and this one is a beautiful example.
It measures 24” x 10”, mounted on a base measuring 25”L x 12”W.
This offering is an opportunity to own rare and vintage models that are complete, working and of excellent quality.
Inspection welcomed.
